3 key takeaways for Mexico in their win over Jamaica

With one vital match of three out of the way for the Mexican National Team this qualifying window, we bring you our 3 key takeaways in their win over Jamaica.

Alexis Vega

The man of the match selected by El Tri Online was Alexis Vega, who played the entire 90 minutes. In addition to scoring a goal, he had three shots on target, won three one-on-one duels, and had a pass effectivity of 94%. The Mexican forward was key in his team’s victorious comeback.

Following the match, the Chivas player told TUDN that being down one goal was a mental blow for them; however, everyone kept running and demonstrated solidarity.

“This is how you win these types of games,” Vega told TUDN. “You have to run, you have to shoot, and the shots you get, you have to score.”

‘TATA’S’ LINEUP SUBSTITUTIONS

Gerardo Martino was under a lot of pressure for the duel against Jamaica, and in some instances, he appeared to be stressed, especially when his squad was unable to make the shots they had when in front of the goal.

‘Tata’ had to make obligatory changes in his starting lineup, like that of Jorge Sanchez, who suffered an injury in the first four minutes of the game. However, his best modification was ‘Tecatito’ Corona and Diego Lainez; the fans heavily criticized Tata for calling Lainez due to his lack of play-time with Real Betis. Despite that, Lainez was able to redeem himself with his performance.

THE THREE POINTS

Without a doubt, the biggest takeaway of the game was the victory. The Mexicans created plenty of opportunities, but with the majority of those opportunities missed, the sense of desperation grew.

Even with Paul Hall’s squad being at a disadvantage by being down ten players, the Reggae Boyz were superior in set plays, leaving El Tri against the ropes for most of the game.

Nevertheless, Mexico made a comeback in two minutes with goals from Henry Martín and Alexis Vega in the last 10 minutes of playing time.

Three vital points give Martino’s project oxygen and keep his men third in the CONCACAF standings with a secured ticket to the World Cup.

Next up, Mexico will host Costa Rica on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 6 pm E.T.
