3 KEY TAKEAWAYS OF THE CANADA VS US MATCH
Canada had their most anticipated home match of the qualifiers against the US, in an impressive game sealed at the 95th minute in favor of the Maple Leaf. With this win, their first over the United States in World Cup Qualifiers since 1980, Canada secured their spot as leaders on the road to the World Cup until the next window of games. We bring you three key outtakes of the game.
Cyle Larin Record
Cyle Larin became Canada’s male top scorer when he scored the first goal of the match early in the game, with 23 goals in 44 appearances. He surpassed Dwayne de Rosario with his 22 goals in 81 matches. De Rosario immediately took to Twitter to Congratulate Larin on the feat.
The 25-year-old who plays in Besiktas was assisted by Jonathan David, who proved once more to be the best man of the Canadian side.
Five-game Win Streak
Canada keeps the impressive momentum and today’s was their fifth consecutive victory, against the team that began the qualifiers as favorites, due to the football they showed when they won the Gold Cup and the Nations Cup last year.
Four of those victories were against the other teams on top of the table, and despite having to resort to impressive saves by Borjan, they dominated all the matches.
US Diminishing Goal Count
The US began to recover after a slow beginning in the Octagonal scoring 4 times against Honduras and then twice against Jamaica in the fourth matchday. Following a surprising defeat at Panama, they had a solid goal count of four in their matches against Mexico and Costa Rica at home
They since have seemed to be losing steam as they have only managed to net twice in their last three games. Against Canada, they had three shots on target, but only once they forced Milan Borjan to pull off an impressive save.
The US seems solid across all lines, but the last touch almost always falls short. The Pulisic-led attack, despite its flare, will have to up its effectiveness, because they still need to visit Mexico and Costa Rica, and they have allowed less than one goal per game. Most likely, the US will avoid the tragic fate of Russia 2018, but their attack needs to polish its aim if they don’t want to get into a nail-biting situation during their last games. Or worse.
