A Lo Atlas! Aggregate Time Goal Ends Atlas Upset Bid Versus Tigres
Atlas wasted a golden opportunity at home and allowed Tigres to steal a point on an aggregate time goal. Leandro Cufre needed at least three of six points in the next two games to secure his job, but a goal in the 94th minute leaves him in a complicated situation.
VAR made an appearance yet again, and after review of a typical corner kick play, Tigres was awarded a controversial penalty kick in the 26th minute of the game. Andre-Pierre Gignac, Tigres’ all-time leading scorer, was unable to capitalize the opportunity as Camilo Vargas saved his attempt.
La Academia was able to make Tigres pay in the 56th minute on a beautiful play. Jesus Isijara dribbled down the wing and was able to get into the box, tapping a three-fingered pass to Facundo Barceloto who bent a first touch left-footed shot past Nahuel Guzman.
Just when it looked like Los Zorros were going to shock Liga MX and give Cufre his three points, a lo Atlas, Tigres was able to tie the game on aggregate time. Javier Aquino took a desperation shot from long range, the shot was deflected and landed on Jesus Duenas thigh who then took a sloppy right-footed shot past Vargas.
The draw puts Cufre in a difficult situation as his Zorros will now need to beat an undefeated America team on Friday night at home to extend his stay as their head coach. Tigres will look for a more productive offensive outing as they prepare to host a surging Leon team on Saturday.
