America Rescues a 1-0 Win Against Atlas at the Estadio Azteca.

The America vs Atlas fixture has been one that in recent memory has always been an interesting one to watch. This holds even truer if you dial things back just a bit to when Andres Guardado used to play for the Rojinegros; you’ll definintely find a few gems scored during those days. Unfortunately, todays America vs Atlas match didn’t quite live up to the same hype. Both teams came into the game in desperate need of a win. Atlas needed to snap a two-game losing streak while a win would at the same time also put them right in the middle of the table. America was in search of their first win since the Super Clasico in mid-September.

Despite both teams having their strong reasons for wanting to win the game, the match was mostly a slow one for those watching. America did have clear chances, perhaps the clearest of all going to Federico Viñas, with the Uruguayan missing both clear chances. Atlas had a few chances as well, however none as clear as America’s. Just as it would seem like the game would end in a 0-0 draw, which would have been truly disappointing to the home team as America had clearer chances to score during the game, America was able to find the back of the net. Immediately ensuing from a corner kick, America was able to re-center the ball in the area for a wide-open Jorge Sanchez to score the game winner in the 88th minute of play.

With this win, America remains in the fight for Top 3 of the tournament, with a second-place spot and 28 points. The Aguilas could still be leapfrogged however by Pumas or Cruz Azul depending on their respective sores. This win also sets up a very important match for next weekend: 2nd place America vs 3rd place Tigres.
