Atlas ends America’s undefeated streak after a 3-0 win

Atlas finally gets the win and ends America’s undefeated streak at the Estadio Jalisco after a 3-0 victory.

Atlas and America faced off in the second game of the Liga MX week 8, and both teams were coming off heartbreaking draws at home after losing a lead at home midweek in the final minutes of the game. Los Rojinegros were looking for their first win in over 5 weeks and Las Aguilas wanted to continue their unbeaten streak and stretch it to 9 games.

The first half saw a back and forth affair by both teams as no one was able to clearly make some opportunities that would worry the goalies.

Just before the half Atlas got their break after Jesus Isijara beats Paul Aguilar inside the box and received a cross which he heads into the right goalpost, passing the outstretched hands of Guillermo Ochoa and Atlas took the lead in 45th minute.

As the second half began, America started an all attack onslaught in the first 15 minutes of play, sending men forward and pressuring Atlas up top. America’s first major opportunity came from the feet of Roger Martinez, in the 50th minute as a he juggled a difficult pass but able to position himself enough to send a rocket-like shot that hit the top crossbar of Camila Vargas, leaving all the Atlas players and fans with a sigh of relief as that ball did not go in.

Just as America continued to pressure, it seemed like they were close to tying the game, Los Rojinegros punched a dent in Las Aguilas hopes in the 64th minute. In a set-piece, Osvaldo Martinez sent a cross that found the head of Ismael Govea who put the ball into the net for the 2-0 lead.

America was never able to recover after the second goal, as they tried to create opportunities but without any true help from Roger Martinez, who was was a lone wolf trying to secure at least a draw.

Right before the end of the game, Los Zorros put the final nail in the coffin and this time for good as Brayan Trejo scored the first goal of his young career as a professional players, stealing the ball from an America defender, and carrying the ball 3/4 of the field into the box and rifling a shot to the top corner of the goal over Ochoa for the 3-0.

Atlas now has 14 pts and is awaiting the rest of the week to see if they stay in the top 5. Miguel Herrera’s team will now look to regroup and hopefully, have some of their key players back from injury, as well as count on their two new signees.

Note: Miguel Herrera was given a second yellow during halftime and was not able to return to the bench in the second half.

Martin Nervo, was shown a red card after VAR showed a gruesome sliding tackle on Guido Rodriguez that could have seriously injured the Aguilas Midfielder. Nervo will now be missing out on the Classico Tapatio next week.
