Atlético de Madrid officially announce Hector Herrera signing.

Atlético de Madrid said on their website that they would be signing Mexican star, Hector Herrera tomorrow to a 3-year contract. Herrera spent the last six seasons with Portuguese powerhouse, FC Porto and helped the team win the top flight in the 2017-18 season. Also, Herrera played in the UEFA Champions League in 5 out 6 seasons and participated in 41 tournament matches with the Portuguese side.

The team also welcomed Hector on their social media platforms and commended the 29-year-old from Baja California Norte for his accolades and style of play. He will also become the fourth Mexican player to dress up in an Atlético de Madrid jersey, joining Mexican legends Hugo Sanchez and Luis Garcia and most recently, Raúl Alonso Jiménez.

Herrera was heavily criticized the last couple of months for opting not to participate in the Gold Cup this year. He posted the announcement on Twitter, and many fans went as far as calling him a traitor, among other things.

Herrera cited the fact that he had played over 50 games and needed some mental and physical recovery, but to the fans, it didn’t matter. The fact that he wasn’t going to the Gold Cup with the Mexican National team was enough for fans to turn on him. Despite the fans anger towards Herrera, as it turns out the team has not missed him nor any of the other players who opted not to participate as the team clinched a spot into Sunday’s Gold Cup final.

It will be interesting to see how El Zorillo fits into Diego Simeone’s system. The Argentine led Los Colchoneros to another successful La Liga season and by finishing second his team qualified directly to the group stage of the 2019-20 Champions League. El Cholo has been looking to add players that will help him lift the La Liga trophy for the first time since 2014.

The team from Madrid is scheduled to play in this year’s MLS All-Star game that will be held in Orlando on July 31, that should be plenty of time for Herrera to incorporate to his new team and potentially participate in the event.
