Atletico San Luis defeats Monterrey and take their first 3 points
Atletico San Luis hosted their second game at Estadio Alfonso Lastras. Los Auriazules received Monterrey, a team with a big advantage of a roster over them, and one of the favorites to win this year’s title.
At the 17th minute, Matias Catalan score the first goal of the night, for San Luis.
The goal came via free-kick after a horrible mistake from Nicolas Sanchez, on an attempt to clear the ball from the 18-yard box he committed a foul that gave him a yellow card.
Matias Catalan shot a missile right through the wall and the ball was too powerful for Monterrey’s goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero’s hands.
The home team kept pressing and at the 32nd minute, Nicolas Ibanez missed a clear shot that would’ve given the Potosinos the 2-0 advantage. On a through ball Ibañez couldn’t control the ball right and on a challenge 1v1 with the goalie, his shot was too weak.
At the end of the first half, San Luis retained their advantage even though the stats said that Monterrey had 66% possession of the ball, the home team was more accurate and dangerous with four shots on goal, compared to only one by Monterrey.
Catalan’s goal was the first goal for his team San Luis in Liga MX after their promotion. The Potosino team lost their first match against Pumas 2-0.
Los Regios went all in by the second half pushing all their lines forward and making the home team to play most of the time on their side of the field. It was an intensive second half with Monterrey having most of the possession of the ball and increasing it to 68% and 12 shots on goal. San Luis coach, Alfonso Sosa, decided to park the bus on goal and play on the counter-attack. It was a good strategy since they had a few chances on the counter-attack and were close to increasing their advantage.
The clearest option to score came at the 89th minute when Monterrey’s Maximiliano Meza took a shot from a very close range but it was blocked by Carlos Rodriguez and then by Mario de Luna on the second opportunity.
The solid defense of Los Potosinos gave Atletico San Luis their first three points in Liga MX and being a promoted team it means a lot more to earn points every week due to percentages for relegation.
