Bayern downs Tigres in FIFA Club World Cup Final

The 2021 FIFA Club World Cup Final versus Bayern Munich was billed “the biggest game in the history of Mexican clubs,” and for Tigres, it was a chance to make history. After defeating Palmeiras in the tournament’s semifinal, there were very few optimists who thought the Mexican team had a chance to win. Despite their valiant effort, the UEFA Champions League trophy holders proved to be too powerful, even without a complete roster.

No Walk in the Park for Bayern

Despite edging Tigres in most first-half statistics, Bayern was unable to get on the score. The Germans did create several dangerous opportunities, but the most impactful moment of the first half came in the 18th minute when Joshua Kimmich’s goal was taken away after an offside VAR review.

Tigres managed to keep the European’s attack at bay and the teams went to the lockers without any score and allow Tuca Ferretti to regroup his men.

Too Much Offense to Contain

Bayern continued to dominate the possession and forced the Mexican squad to play on their side of the field most of the second half. In the 59th minute, the Germans finally broke through. Robert Lewandowski beat the Tigres defenders inside the box, and his header deflected towards Ben Pavard, who scored the first goal of the game. The play had to be reviewed by the VAR and showed that Carlos Salcedo’s foot allowed the possession to be called on-side.

The rest of the second half proved to be more of the same as Bayern’s attack, and pressure did not allow Nuevo Leon’s team to get into any rhythm. The Bundesliga team nearly added another goal when Carlos Salcedo’s back header almost went into the goal, but Guzman could chase it down and stop it on the goal line.

In the end, the German team proved to be too much and ended lifting yet another trophy. Tigres fans should be proud of their team, as they were historic and proudly represented the confederation. Hopefully, this final appearance is the first of many more to come for CONCACAF. Tigres will return to Liga MX action next Wednesday when they take on Cruz Azul.
