Can Liga MX survive another stoppage?

The answer is simple; yes, it can. The more significant concern is the repercusions and how long it would take to make the league attractive and profitable once again?

COVID-19 has dealt an enormous blow to Liga MX; it already forced the league to cancel the last season. That, of course, meant millions of dollars in lost revenue because the playoffs did not take place. To make matters worse, when the new season finally resumed, the teams had to play without fans in the stadium. Ticket sales are a significant amount of the owner’s revenue, and we do not know how long playing without fans in attendance will last.

Liga MX and its Television partners are doing their best to try and recoup as much money as possible. They begin by creating the Copa por México tournament, which performed exceptionally well in the ratings. Also, the league has added games on some Thursdays and many Monday nights. But it is hard to guess if that will be enough for the teams to break even.

The owners and the league understand that ultimately, it will take time for things to get back to normal; however, the uncertainty could take a mental toll on the owners and stakeholders, and I would not be surprised if irrational decisions begin to occur.

Regardless, Liga MX needs to keep a very close eye on the COVID-19 situation. If more players continue to test positive, it may have to do more than just move games around. Cancellation of the season, once again, maybe the last resort, but a smart one. None of us who are fans of the league want this campaign to come to an abrupt end, but if it means saving a person’s life, then I am all for the season wrapping up early.

Even if it gets to that point that the season must come to an end, the league will not fold. It will take time for the Mexican Top-Flight to return to its glorious days. The team owners have bottomless pockets and should be able to absorb the financial blows that having no games could mean to their wallets. No one is sure how long it would take for the league to become profitable again, but it will happen.

All we can do now is wait, and hope for the best.
