Chicharito and West Ham get hammered by Man City on EPL opening day
Javier Chicharito Hernandez stepped into the field in the 66th minute of the game with his team down 2-0. However, he was unable to help his team comeback as Manchester City tallied three more goals on their way to victory in the EPL opening weekend.
Raheem Sterling led the way for the Citizens by scoring a hat-trick, while Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Agüero added the other two goals. A historic moment took place in this game as the VAR officially made its debut in the English top-flight and Gabriel Jesus was its first “victim.”
In the 53rd minute, the Brazilian scored a goal with an easy tap-in inside the small box, but after a VAR review, the goal was waved off. The play was as tight as could be, and had there not been any review; it would have remained a goal. 99 out of 100 times plays such as this one, would have stayed a goal, but the technology is here, and now the players and fans will have to deal with its long-lasting effects.
Chicharito, for his part, had a lackluster performance with two shots on goal. It will be interesting to see if Manuel Pellegrini continues to use him as a substitute. The West Ham boss could easily decide to give him another opportunity to regain his confidence, but that depends on the Mexican’s performance.
