Chivas and Toluca split points at Akron

Matchday two of the young Liga MX Clausura season saw Chivas Guadalajara and Deportivo Toluca F.C. draw 1-1 at Akron Stadium. The match saw Chivas get a second draw in as many games after also having tied against Puebla last week.

Chivas, who made its home debut this season, came into this game without Jose Juan Macias for the second consecutive game after testing positive for COVID-19. Meanwhile, Isaac Brizuela came off the bench after missing the previous game because of an injury.

On the other hand, Toluca was top of the league early on after defeating Queretaro 3-1 last week. However, Los Diablos Rojos also have not won an away game in their last seven on the road dating back to last the Apertura.

Tale of Two Halves

The first half was a back and forth affair between both sides, with Guadalajara opening the scoring in the 24th minute.

Jesus Molina was left unmarked on a corner kick and capitalized as his bullet header gave Chivas the 1-0 lead. That goal marked the midfielder’s 30th goal in the Liga MX in 423 games.

However, the lead for Chivas was short-lived as Toluca immediately replied with a goal of their own a minute later.

A thunderbolt strike from outside the box courtesy of midfielder Kevin Castaneda froze the goalkeeper and tied it at 1-1. This was Castaneda’s third goal in the league, all coming from outside the opponent’s penalty box.

The first half and match ended in a 1-1 draw with both sides taking a point.

Chivas finished the game with 60% of possession and 16 shots, 6 of them on target. Los Rojiblancos especially looked dangerous on corners throughout the game but couldn’t take their chances.

Miguel Ponce came closest to breaking the deadlock for Chivas in the 77th minute. The midfielder was one-on-one with the goalkeeper but passed instead of shooting, ruining the chance to score.
