Chivas edges Atlas in El Clasico Tapatio.
The oldest and one of the most heated rivalries in Mexican football returned this weekend. Las Chivas Rayadas and Los Zorros del Atlas faced each other this Saturday in “El Classico Tapatio.”
It was a very confusing first half for both teams. Although Chivas remained with most of the ball possession, it wasn’t enough for them to open the scoreboard. For their part, Atlas struggled to keep the ball. However, they kept pushing for opportunities during counterattacks to create chances to score. Regardless, neither team did enough to score a goal, and the teams went to lockers scoreless at the half.
El Chiverio remained confident of scoring thanks to their home crowd. That confidence led to a goal for Chivas with a shot outside the box at minute 63 by Alexis Vega. The game began to heat up, and Atlas boosted their confidence. The pressure of Estadio Akron causes Zorros to suffer a terrible blow. In minute 80 Jorge Segura received a red card from the referee and Atlas was forced to play with ten players.
The advantage Chivas had as a local and Atlas’ bad day caused them to lose three points at Estadio Akron. Guadalajara’s win gives them hope to continue the fight for play-offs as well as valuable points to remain out of the relegation zone.
