Chivas upends Atlas 3-2 in the Tapatío Clásico
Chivas managed a 3-2 victory over Atlas in the Tapatío Clásico on matchday 14 of the 2020 Guardianes Tournament. The game started evenly, although little by little, the Chivas began to take the reins. In the 21st minute, Miguel Ponce appeared to score on a header attempt; however, Camilo Vargas saved his shot on goal. Five minutes later, Isaac Brizuela took a dangerous shot; then, Atlas tried with Javier Abella at the 35th minute. Finally, at the 37th minute, Uriel Antuna scored with a good shot from the area’s edge to make things 1-0. Only 6 minutes later, JJ Macías inked his name on the scoreboard with a superb shot, and at halftime, Guadalajara was winning 2-0.
In the second half, Atlas tried, but without success. In the 59th minute, Víctor Malcorra took a shot which Raúl Gudiño stopped, but then, a great opportunity came at minute 71 with a penalty kick that Malcorra tried to convert, but Gudiño stopped. That missed opportunity cost them dearly because, in the 85th minute, El Conejito Brizuela made things 3-0 in favor of the home team. Two minutes later, Ignacio Jeraldino scored for the Zorros to cut the deficit. They then added another score when at 90+ 3, as Malcorra was able to convert the penalty. However, that goal would not be enough as it ended 3- 2 in favor of Chivas.
With this victory, Chivas reached 22 points, climbing to seventh place, while Atlas stalled at 13 points in fifteenth place. For matchday 15 of the MX League, Guadalajara will host Cruz Azul next Sunday, while the Atlas will visit América the day before.
