Club America crowned 2019 Copa MX Champions in Ciudad Juarez!

America defeated Indios 1-0, ending their Copa MX drought and becoming champions this 2019. With a penalty from Victor Aguilera, it was enough to give his team a clear victory.

From the start of the tournament, Indios came up as the underdog after coming out of the group stage. They eliminated two teams from the first division of Liga MX, Leon and Pumas to reach the final. Although they’ve been struggling in Liga de Ascenso, they certainly made their mark in Copa MX.

Las Aguilas did seek some revenge against Juarez after they were eliminated by them last year in the round of 16. It had also been since 1974 that America had not won this cup and Miguel Herrera was on a mission to earn that cup.

In the first half, both teams were having a difficult time trying to get a shot on goal. While both were doing stout defending, America was the one getting through the most. The pressure was affecting Juarez, and on the 37th minute, Christian Perez committed a foul on Henry Martin inside the penalty area, giving Las Aguilas the first opportunity to change the scoreboard.

Victor Aguilera successfully scored the penalty in the 40th minute, putting America up 1-0. Indios quickly reacted and had the chance to equalize on multiple occasions. The closest opportunity came from Leandro Carrijo in the last few minutes inside the goal area, hitting the left post after a great save by Agustin Marchesin.

Ivan Vazquez took a free-kick in the second half, closing in on the right corner of the goal, but Aguilera was able to block with his head. Indios kept fighting on but weren’t getting any closer as America defended and attacked with authority.

In the end, America was victorious and placed themselves as the maximum winner of the Copa MX. Herrera also won the cup for the first time in his career as a coach and became the head coach with the most trophies won in the team’s history.
