Club Leon Are the Guard1anes 2020 Champions

In light of one of the strangest tournaments we could have ever experienced because that’s what 2020 is all about, we can still be happy to say we have a Liga MX champion. In a hard-fought match up with so much drama and intensity, the search for their eighth title is over. Leon is now your Guard1anes 2020 Champions. Let’s break down tonight’s final and how it all played out.

The Early Advantage

The game kicked off and right away you could tell which team wanted to win and get on the board quickly. It only took 12 minutes for Leon to open up the score. Emanuel Gigliotti with a right-footed shot coming in from the right side of the box and landed in the bottom left corner. The assist came at from Fernando Navarro. With that Leon was up one-nil and had no means to stop there.

Not long after at the 15th minute of the match, Angel Mena had to be subbed off due to an injury and Joel Campell came onto the pitch. What seemed a sub in of desperation more than tactical, Pumas took out Carlos Gutierrez and put in Juan Iturbe at the 39th minute. A total of five minutes were added to the first half for stoppage time. At the half, Pumas had a lot to think about and restructure to come back, on the other hand Leon now just had to maintain the advantage.

Leon Seals the Win

The second half kicked off and during the 59th minute, Pumas had to make a sub in due to an injury in the box. Johan Vasquez was replaced by Favio Alvarez. With several subs in and tactical movements on both ends, it was still clear that Los Panza’s Verdes were the more dominant group on the pitch. Taking advantage of every broken play and defensive error, creating plays, and putting in work. Even with less possession of the ball, they were still making sure every time they had the ball they would manage to get near the box.

In the 83rd minute, Leon sealed their victory off an error where Pumas tried to clear the ball but was caught by Luis Montes who gave a beautiful assist to Yairo Moreno. Moreno then went into the box clearing the path and scoring the second goal of the match. With that and only four minutes added on to the second half, Leon sealed their win making the aggregate score 3-1 to be crowned the 2020 Guard1anes Champions.

Having won their 8th Liga MX title Leon now ties Cruz Azul as the team with the 4th most Liga MX titles in history.
