Club León breaks Liga MX record with 11th consecutive victory!
Leon’s historic run in Liga MX continued as they ravaged Puebla 3-0 and claimed their 11th victim in a row. La Franja were unable to end Leon’s streak and maintain their good form having won three of their last five games, the last being a 1-0 victory over Queretaro. Los Esmeraldas continued their impressive run of successes as their previous defeat was January 20th when they fell 1-0 to Xolos. They now own the record for most consecutive victories in Mexican top flight history.
Los Panzas Verdes got the goal scoring started early, striking in just the fifth minute of the game. Angel Mena scored his 12th goal of the season when he intercepted a horrible pass by the Puebla defense near midfield, dribbled unopposed to the edge of the box and struck a right footed shot between two complacent defenders to the bottom right corner of the goal.Leon added to their early lead just 19 minutes later as Jean Meneses scored a scorcher in the 24th minute. Mena took a pass on the right side of the field, passed to Fernando Navarro, who returned the ball with a thru ball to Mena who dribbled inside the box and crossed the ball back to a waiting Meneses. Jean then received the ball with the outside of his right foot causing the ball to pop up a bit, then with the ball in the air unleashed a right-footed missile to the upper left 90 of the goal. The VAR again proved influential in the game in the 46th minute of the first half. A rough play between Mena and Daniel Arreola initially resulted in a foul awarded to Los Camoteros and a yellow card given to Mena. Upon reviewing the VAR, the referee decided to discipline Arreola for an apparent elbow to Mena.Nacho Ambry’ pupils continued to dominate the game and took advantage of the ten-man Franja in the 52nd minute of the game. Joel Campbell found the back of the net after a great thru ball from Luis “Chapito” Montes left him one on one with Nicolas Vikonis, who curled the first-touch a curled shot around into the left of the goal.La Fiera could’ve added to their lead in the 81st minute when Mena channeled his inner Pele, juked Vikonis without touching the ball entered the box, and unfortunately for him overshot the goal.Leon will look to continue their run as they receive and add another victim to their streak as they host Los Zorros of Atlas Saturday, April 20th. As for Chelis’ team, they’ll look to get back on track when they visit El Rebaño Sagrado and their new shepherd Tomas Boy that same day.
