CONCACAF Champions League Preview: Liga MX vs MLS

Day two of the CONCACAF Champions League resumes inside the bubble in Orlando, Florida. This day we have two Liga MX vs MLS matchups as Club America face off against Atlanta United in the 2nd leg of their quarterfinal matchup.

In the late matchup we have LAFC vs Cruz Azul which was the sole matchup in the quarterfinal round that did not get to play their 1st leg.

Club America vs Atlanta United

Atlanta United has the extremely tough task of having to face Club America in this 2nd leg after having lost 3-0 in the Estadio Azteca back in March.

Previously these two had faced each other in the Campeones Cup that resulted in a 3-2 win for Atlanta. Unfortunately for Atlanta they will still be missing their star striker Josef Martinez who had suffered a season ending injury in prior to the first leg matchup.

On the other end Club America will also be missing their lead striker as Henry Martin did test positive for COVID and will miss tonights match.

Atlanta will really need Club America to pull a famous Cruz Azuleada if they have any hope of advancing to the semifinal round and facing the winner of the LAFC vs Cruz Azul matchup.

LAFC vs Cruz Azul

The most anticipated matchup of this quarterfinal round after it was made official. Now nine months after it was supposed to first take place things look a bit different for both teams.

Back in March, LAFC was barely starting league play and had just come off an impressive 3-0 victory against Leon during the round of 16 back in Los Angeles after having lost the 1st leg 2-0 in Leon. They were riding high and were eager to continue showing that they can compete internationally.

On the other hand Cruz Azul was in mid season form with Liga MX being halfway done and as one of the leaders atop the standings. Cruz Azul looked as a very strong and dangerous opponent for the men in black and gold.

Now nine months later things seem different for both teams, LAFC on one hand was eliminated from the MLS Playoffs after having lost to Seattle Sounders 3-1 a little less than 3 weeks ago.

La Maquina themselves come off another terrible “Cruz Azuleada” in the Liga MX playoffs after taking a 4-0 lead that they had in the first leg of their matchup vs Pumas UNAM, they did what many thought would be almost impossible to do and lost the second leg 4-0 and being eliminated because of their lower place on the league table.

With both teams coming off eliminations in their respective leagues, and this being a win or go home match which team will we see with more heart on the pitch to come out with the ticket to the semifinals.
