CONCACAF GOLD CUP TOP MOMENTS: #2 – MEXICO VS. BRAZIL, 2003 FINAL

The CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off Saturday, and this week we’re counting down the top 5 moments for El Tri in their Gold Cup history.  So far on the countdown, we’ve had an all-time great individual performance, a record-setting championship, a big atmosphere…and now, at number 2, perhaps the greatest finish in Mexico Gold Cup history.

Osorno’s Golden Goal

The 2003 Gold Cup tournament for the Mexican National Team, which was held at Azteca Stadium, was capped off by a thrilling Final between Mexico and reigning World Cup champion Brazil in front of 85,000 fans – a rematch from their group stage meeting two weeks earlier, which Mexico won 1-0.  Both teams had plenty of opportunities to win the match in regulation but ended up settling things in sudden-death extra time.

In the 97th minute, Mario Mendez found an unmarked Daniel Osorno in the penalty area, who proceeded to make history with great individual ball-handling skills and accuracy (12:09 in the video below).

Osorno’s goal – the only “Golden Goal” in Gold Cup Finals history – gave El Tri their fourth Gold Cup title, and first since 1998.  He dedicated the win to Mexico’s coach, Ricardo La Volpe, “who had confidence that I could play.”
