CONCACAF GOLD CUP TOP MOMENTS: #4 – MEXICO VS. USA 2019 FINAL
July 10th will mark the start of the 16th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Mexico has won the competition 8 times and will be looking to win their 9th title in Las Vegas this August. Today, we will discuss our 4th entry of El Tri Online’s Top CONCACAF Gold Cup moments for the Mexican National team, and that is the 2019 Final between Mexico and the United States.
Another Dos Santos Brother Steps Up
The 2019 Final of the Gold Cup was held in Chicago’s Soldier Field and marked the 6th time Mexico and the US faced off in a Gold Cup Final. The match took place in front of a sold-out, pro-Mexican crowd of over 60 thousand spectators. The US controlled the game’s early stages, with Jozy Altidore almost scoring in the 8th minute when he navigated past the Mexican backline and hit a shot that went wide right.
Early in the second half, the US would once again knock at the door with a dangerous header from Jordan Morris that Andres Guardado cleared off the line. Mexico was running out of time, and with the score tied at 0, it was time for another Dos Santos to step up and bring Mexico a Gold Cup trophy.
In the 73rd minute and with a gorgeous setup from Raul Jimenez, Jonathan Dos Santos lofted a ball over US goalkeeper Zac Steffen that gave Mexico the lead and its eighth Gold Cup title.
