The CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off this Saturday. In the next five days, we will be counting down the Top 5 moments for El Tri in their Gold Cup history. Yes, there has been plenty of amazing moments throughout the run of this tournament, but we will narrow it down to the top 5 for you. There will obviously be a debate on what that top moment in Gold Cup history is, and we want to hear your thoughts on our list in the comments below.

Zague’s Masterpiece

The second edition of the Gold Cup took place July 1993 and Mexico was placed in Group B with Costa Rica, Canada, and Martinique. The Mexicans were scheduled to start the tournament vs. Martinique and to say they started with a bang is an understatement.

Mexico’s 9-0 win over Martinique was led by Luis Roberto Alves ‘Zague’ who went to score Gold Cup-record, seven goals that still stands. Zague, finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with 11 goals, also still a record.

Zaguinho’s performance was one for the ages and worthy enough to place it in the top 5 Gold Cup moments of all time. Mexico went on to win the Gold Cup that year with 4-0 thrashing of the United States, but the performance vs. Martinique remains the highlight of the tournament.

Do you think this performance deserves to be in the top 5 moments? Make sure to tune-in the next few days to find out what the remaining top moments in Gold Cup history.
