Cruz Azul and America disappoint in the Clasico Joven with a 0-0 draw at Azteca
A late-night Sunday showdown in El Clasico Joven in Liga MX. Cruz Azul hosting Club America in a possible finals preview. Cruz Azul is looking to stay atop the table as the number one seed and America is looking to keep pace as this game has important implications for playoff seeding. In a surprising twist, Aguila’s starting goalie was injured during pre-game warm-ups and was a late scratch for this game. He was replaced by back-up goalie Oscar Jiminez.
America came out on full attack mode for this match. They created two early opportunities and it appeared they would take the lead, but the ball just could not make it was to the back of the net. Las Aguilas dominated possession early in the first half. La Maquina appeared content with playing the counter-attack. However, that changed as the Cementeros slowly started implementing their game plan. In what appeared to be a high scoring affair, was all but that. The two teams went into halftime in a 0-0 tie. Even the possession battle was almost even at the half.
No changes for either team in the second half. Both teams appeared to not take any chances on defense. Up to the 65th minute it this half mirrored the first half. The second half continued and neither team was able to produce a goal. Yes, both teams had some opportunities to score, but you have to give credit to both goalies, Jesus Corona, and back up goalie for Club America as they made every stop that was shot on goal. This isn’t the result anyone expected, especially with zero goals. Now the Liga MX top 5 positions are as follows. Leon is top with 27 points, then we have Cruz Azul with 26, America is a close third with 24 points as Pumas and Tigres round up the top 5.
