Cruz Azul Dominates Pumas in the first leg of their playoff matchup.
This was a match you did not want to miss. It’s barely the first leg of the series and we already have so much to expect for the second Leg. With a dominating performance from Los Cementeros will travel comfortably to their next match with a four-goal advantage. Let’s break down tonight’s matchup.
Easy as one, two, three…
No one told Cruz Azul they had 90 minutes of playtime to score goals tonight. They rolled into and scored not one but, three goals in the first 15 minutes. The first goal that opened up the scoreboard was at the second minute following a corner. Roberto Alvarado’s right-footed shot from close range to the center of the goal. The assist came from Orbelin Pineda. The second goal was at the eighth minute from Rafael Baca with a right-footed shot to the top right corner from outside of the box. Pumas could not catch a break because at the 13th minute the third goal came in from Luis Romo. With a shot to the bottom left corner of the box. The assist came from Roberto Alvarado with a headed pass.
So much was going on in the first half you could not keep your eyes off the screen. Cruz Azul had to make an early sub in due to an injury. Adrian Aldrete was subbed off and Jose Martinez came in. The match continued and Cruz Azul continued to try and increase the score as Pumas had their work cut out for them and were now playing catch up early on in the match. Finally, after three additional minutes, the whistle blew and both teams head to the locker rooms for halftime. The score was three-nil.
La Maquina was on overdrive
The second half was no different from the first when it came to intensity. Plays were cut short, opportunities and great plays were being demonstrated on the pitch. We started seeing more sub in from both sides to change things up and get UNAM on the board. Pumas defense had to change their mind completely if they wanted to stop Los Cementeros from scoring. That did not go according to plan because at the 65th minute Cruz Azul scored again. This time it was ruled out due to an offside but it was clear Pumas could not stop them even if they tried.
We thought we had seen it all in this game but that was not the case. As we thought the match would be over even with the additional minutes that were added on. Cruz Azul had one more in the bag for the away team. A goal in compensation time makes the score four-zero. Luis Romo gets a brace tonight taking a right-footed shot to the bottom of the box. The Assist came from Santiago Giménez following a fast break stunning Pumas once again. The final whistle blew and we conclude the first leg of the series. Their next matchup will be on Sunday, December 6th, at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
