Cruz Azul dominates Tigres in the first leg of the Guardianes Liguilla

As the quarter-finals’ first legs are coming to a close, the excitement gets real. Tonight was no different, as Cruz Azul put on a show against Tigres as they stood out on the pitch with a 1-3 victory. Let’s run down tonight’s matchup and how the teams performed.

Tuca Ferretti’s team had a match they soon will want to forget. Despite being the dominant force on the pitch and had some great statistics, they fell short. With possession of the ball being at 72 percent and having 17 shots and 6 on target, they only managed to score one goal in the second half. They had many opportunities cut short by Los Cementeros, and their defense struggled to contain them from getting in the box.

Cruz Azul took advantage of every opportunity they got when they had the ball. They opened up the score first in the 30th minute of the match with a goal by Juan Escobar. He took a right footed shot from the right side of the box to the top right corner thanks to an assist was by Roberto Alvarado. After Los Felinos had tied them, Cruz Azul’s second goal came at the 54th minute by Johnathan Rodriguez. He took a right-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom right corner following an assist was from Luis Romo. The latter was not done as he scored the third goal of the match at the 71st minute. He took a right footed shot from the right side of the six-yard box to the top right corner.

Tigres kept pushing but could not find the means to catch up. The referee gave a total of 3 additional minutes of extra time. Without being able to score anymore, the final whistle was blown. The home team failed to win. Cruz Azul now has the aggregate lead, and the next match of the series will be Sunday, November 29th, at the Azteca.
