Cruz Azul spoils Atlas 103rd anniversary and takes 3 points from el Jalisco

Cruz Azul played party pooper at El Estadio Jalisco on a day that was meant to be a celebration for Atlas defeating Los Zorros 3-1. La Academia was not only celebrating its 103rd anniversary, but they also had their youth championship teams on hand for a celebration that never was.

La Maquina struck first in the 26th minute. Milton Caraglio took control of the ball after a set of 50/50 balls and sent a thru ball to Orbelin Pineda who made a first touch shot through the legs of a charging Camilo Vargas.

Los Azules made their dominance evident on the scoreboard in the 48th minute of the first half. On a set-piece play, Adrian Aldrete placed a good ball in the box that Caraglio headed to the bottom left past a helpless Vargas.

Caixinha’s men to put the game away three minutes into the second half from the 11 pace mark. Hugo Nervo went crazy and turned a routine slide into a bulldozing challenge in the box. Caraglio got his brace from the penalty spot, by placing his left-footed shot to into the top left corner.

La Academia attempted to save face as they took one back in the 71st minute. On a dead ball, Osvaldo Martinez placed a shot in the box, and in a role reversal, Jorge Segura beat Caraglio and placed a header to the top right of Corona’s goal.

An abysmal performance on the celebration of their 103rd anniversary has Cufre on the hot seat. He may no longer be leading Los Zorros when they visit Pachuca next Saturday. La Maquina will look to continue their winning streak on Tuesday when they visit the LA Galaxy in the Semifinals of the Leagues Cup and host Puebla on Saturday.
