Cruz Azul Up-Ends Atlas Campeón de Campeones Match Up
Carson, CA – On a warm, sunny, 82-degree day the defending Liga MX Champions, Atlas, was competing against former Liga MX champion Cruz Azul. Atlas managed to defend its title in back-to-back Liga MX seasons now, a feat that has only been accomplished by 3 teams. In 2004 UNAM went back-to-back, then again in 2013 while in 2014 Leon won back-to-back titles. Now in 2021 and 2022 Atlas joins that short list of back-to-back champions in short tournaments. It was a packed house in Dignity Health Sports Park as both Cruz Azul fans and Atlas fans arrived early and cheered on with passion their respected teams. This was a match-up of the last 2 Champions for Liga MX; the so-called Campeones Cup.
As both teams began to play, they appeared somewhat rusty. That was expected as both are still prepping for the upcoming season. The teams went back and forth exchanging some shots on goal while both fan bases cheered on enthusiastically and set off smoke bombs in the stands as the game proceeded. In the 41st minute of the game, the defending champions drew first blood taking a 1-0 lead. Off a free kick, Emanuel Aguilera placed the ball behind the net with immaculate accuracy. Just minutes later, at 45’+3′, Santiago Jimenez scored and tied the game up. The teams went into the locker room at half-time with a 1-1 tie.
The second half was exciting as both teams went back and forth and in the 63rd minute, Cruz Azul took the lead with a beautiful header from Angel Romero. Los Cementeros were in a prime position to win this game and earn another trophy. However, Los Zorros had other plans, and they clawed shots on goal. They were not phased and as time was dwindling to the compensation time, a miracle occurred. In the 91st minute, the back-to-back champions managed to tie this duel up at 2 goals a piece. In the blink of an eye, the game ended in a tie and we were looking at penalty kicks.
The penalty kicks were exciting as the crowd held their breath and roared after every scored penalty shot. After it was all over, it was Cruz Azul who prevailed in penalty kicks 3-4. Cruz Azul added another trophy to their impressive collection.
