Dos Santos and Antuna’s Return to LA Galaxy Not Enough to help Win Second Installment of Cali Clásico
Recent Mexico Gold Cup champions, Jonathan Dos Santos and Uriel Antuna, returned to their regular squad duties with the LA Galaxy for this weekends slate of MLS games. Much to the joy of Galaxy fans, they arrived just in time for this seasons second installment of the Cali Clásico against San Jose. Coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto did not hesitate to bring back the two Mexicans to the starting lineup and in the process gave another Mexican youngster, Efrain Alvarez, another starting lineup call-up for the season. Matias Almeyda and San Jose were without newly acquired Mexican player Carlos Fierro, who has yet to debut this season.
Things started off well for the Galaxy. Rolf Feltscher, also returning from international duty, in this instance with Venezuela in the Copa America, was able to score a header at the 2nd minute, stunning the visiting Earthquakes. The visiting team would not hold back however and insisted throughout the first half. The home teams goalie, David Bingham, however, showed up to work inspired and stopped everything coming his way. San Jose’s shots, both from near and far, were all deflected by Bingham to keep the score in the Galaxy’s favor.
The heroics would continue for the second half as well, with Bingham again denying anything headed his way. However, the saying “something’s gotta give” would become true for the visiting team when at the 62nd minute, a potent shot from outside the half circle by Vako would find its way past Bingham and into the back of the net. With the score tied, both teams had barely snapped back from the goal when two minutes later, on his first touch after having come onto the field as a substitution, San Jose forward Danny Hoesen scored off a rebound inside the area. Just like that, after a game full of heroics from Bingham, the Galaxy found themselves down 2-1. It didn’t take long for things to get worse the Galaxy, as San Jose’s Jackson Yueill scored the decisive 3-1 at the 85th minute. With this score the San Jose Earthquakes continued their dominance over the LA Galaxy winning the Cali Clásico for the second time this year.
The Galaxy will stay home and play host to another bitter rival, LAFC, next week. San Jose for their part will head up north to Canada to face off with the Vancouver Whitecaps.
