ETO Overhyped or Bonafide: Francisco “Kikin” Fonseca
Many great players have graced the Liga MX, from great extranjeros to local players, at the same time we have seen overhyped, media inflated players rammed down fans throats. With that in mind, we want you to help us decide whether a player is overhyped or bonafied .
Francisco “Kikin” Fonseca
Fonseca is currently an on-air talent for Televisa Deportes. In his playing days, he was a two-time Liga MX Champion, winning both titles with Pumas in 2004. He has played outside of Mexico in a forgettable stint with Benfica and Santos. Not that Santos, Santos de Guadalupe F.C. in Costa Rica. Kikin also played in 43 games for El Tri participating in one World Cup, a Confederations Cup, and a Copa de Oro.
Now, let us break down el Kikin’s career in numbers. He played a total of 479 games scoring 128 goals with a .27 goals per game average which puts him on par with players like Angel Reyna. He got his start with Union de Curtidores and played with Atletico Yucatan and La Piedad. He made the jump to UNAM, and Cruz Azul, before moving overseas and returning to play for Tigres and Atlante. He moved to Benfica in 2006 only playing 13 games before returning to Mexico. His most prolific seasons were for Pumas in 03-04 scoring 20 goals and in 05-06 scoring 16 for Cruz Azul.
With the national team, he scored 21 goals in 43 games with a.49 goals per game average. Most of Fonseca’s goals came in friendlies and qualifiers, only scoring 3 goals at major tournaments in 11 games. His .27 goals per game in those competitions is not the production from a striker you expect.
So, now for the important part, is Kikin an overinflated tronco or a legit star? You tell us.
