With Tigres making history last week reaching the final of the Club World Cup with Andre-Pierre Gignac leading the way, many have stated that he may be the best foreign player to have played in Liga MX. so with that in mind, we countdown the best extranjeros to play in Liga MX.
10. Nahuel Guzman
Hear me out here, controversial comments aside, if this team has had the success it has it’s because of the pillar Nahuel has been at goal for Tigres. Since arriving in Liga MX Guzman has won four Liga MX titles, three Campeon de Campeones, and one ConcaChampions.
9. Rodrigo “El Pony” Ruiz
While El Pony only won one Liga MX title, he maintained a high level across all the teams he played for, standing out most during his time in Puebla, Toros Neza, and Santos. In his time in Liga MX he played 757 games scoring 141 goals and tallying 217 assists. He led the league in assists in eight tournaments.
8. Carlos Reynoso
El Maestro defined the 70’s with America. He played 297 games and scored 88 goals while winning two Liga MX titles, one Copa MX, 1 Copa Concacaf, and one Copa Interamericana.
7. Dario Veron
El Hechicero was a historic defender for UNAM and Liga MX. While at Pumas Veron won four Liga MX, 1 Campeon de Campeones, and a Trofeo Santiago Bernabe in 451 appearances. He was a vita part of the team that won back to back Liga MX titles.
6. Alex Aguinaga
Aguinaga was a crucial part of the Necaxa team that dominated the 90’s in Liga MX. During his stint with Los Rayos, he won three Liga MX titles, one Copa MX, one Campeon de Campeones, one Recopa Concacaf, and one Copa Concacaf. He was also voted player of the decade in the ’90s and had his number 7 retired by Necaxa.
5. Andre Pierre-Gignac
The Frenchman has dominated Liga MX since arriving winning four Liga MX titles in five years, along with three Campeon de Campeones, one Concacaf Champions League, a Champions Cup, and into the final of the Club World, if his current form continues, don’t doubt he will work his way up this list.
4. Evanivaldo Castro
Cabinho is Liga MX’s all-time leading scorer. He scored 312 goals in his time in Mexico en route to winning one Liga MX title and one Copa MX. He remains the leading scorer for Pumas with 151 goals and Atlante with 108 goals.
3. Miguel Marin
Before the Cruzazuleadas, there was Miguel Marin. El Superman lead Cruz Azul to five Liga MX titles, one Copa de Campeones Concacaf, and one Campeon de Campeones. He remains one of the most effective goal stoppers in Liga MX history.
2. Miguel Calero
El Condor anchored the Tuzo backline from 2000-2011. During his tenure, Los Tuzos won four Liga MX titles, four Concacaf titles, one North American Superliga, and one Copa Sudamericana. The latter being the biggest victory for any Mexican team at the club level.
1.Jose Cardozo
El Diablo Mayor terrorized defenses for a decade accumulating 249 goals in 332 games for Toluca. He accumulated four Liga MX titles, one Concacaf Champions Cup. He won the Liga MX golden boot including 36 goals in 25 matches in the 2002 Apertura. In 2003 he was FIFA’s Top Scorer of the year having scored 58 goals.
