ETO Top 10: Liga MX Iconic Goal Celebrations
Last week Chicharito celebrated his first and second goals against the New York Redbulls hitting Antoine Griezmann’s iconic “hotline Bling Celebration”. This got me thinking about Iconic Goal Celebrations we’ve had in Liga MX and the players that became synonymous with them.
10. Marco Antonio “El Fantasma” Figueroa
Who hasn’t celebrated a goal during the neighborhood cascara or a kick around by pulling their shirt over their head? El Fantasma made this celebration his own before FIFA made the celebrations illegal.
9. Gustavo “El Gusano” Napoles – El Gusano
Napoles’ celebration was synonymous with his nickname as he hit the Worm to celebrate goals, none more memorable than those during Chivas’ Verano 97 Championship run.
8. Luis Gabriel “El Canguro” Rey – El Canguro
Rey played for 9 Liga MX teams and won six trophies during his time in Mexico, he got his nickname from his particular goal celebration never more on display than in 2003 when he was Liga MX’s top scorer.
7. Sebastian “Chamagol”Gonzalez – El Chavo Del 8
Like many, Chamagol was a fan of the show Chespirito, and as such, mimicked the El Chavo del 8’s iconic dance to celebrate goals. He later included different characters and props from this show into his goal celebrations.
6. Andre-Pierre Gignac – Warrior Eyes
The Frenchman has been on a tear since he arrived in Mexico becoming a Tigres and Liga MX Icon in the process. His celebration cem later after getting Warrior Eyes tattooed on his forearm, Gignac covers his own eyes with the tattoo as his celebration.
5. Angel Reyna – Mistica
Reyna unleashed his Mistica celebration during his time in Monterrey and Pachuca. El Pleititos has since retired the celebration having only scored two goals in his last three years as an active player.
4. Rodolfo Pizarro – Pizarro Dance
Pizarro’s dance became iconic during his time with Monterrey and Chivas, and even inspired Chivas Femenil player Norma Palafox to recreate The Pizarro Dance as her goal celebration.
3. Vicente Matias Vousos – El Vuoso Polar
Vousos’ iconic dance started during his time at Santos Laguna. At that time El Oso Polar became a popular song in the region, and Vouso made it his own with his particular dance moves.
2. Paul Aguilar- Muevelo
Now, if we are going to talk about particular moves, Paul Aguilar’s iconic dance takes the cake. While not the most aesthetically pleasing set of moves, it was good enough to get into EA Sports FIFA Celebrations.
1.Cuauhtémoc Blanco – Temoseñal
We could probably make a whole list of Blanco’s celebrations……note to self, next list, Cuauhtemoc’s top Celebrations….anywho, his pose remains one the if not the most iconic celebrations and can still be seen in Sunday Leagues all over the USA and Mexico.
