Chapecoense played Luis Otavio in that match, however, Otavio had seen a red card the game before. To add insult to injury, Otavio scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory. CONMEBOL gave the win and the three points to Lanus, and the Brazilian squad was eliminated.
4. Chumi – FC Barcelona (2019)
In 2019 Barcelona lined up with Chumi in their round of 16 match against Levante. The issue was that Chumi had seen a red card in his last game while playing with Barcelona B. Cruz Azul found a new and innovative way to cruzazulearla in 2007. Salvador Carmona had received a lifetime ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport for testing positive once again in an anti-doping control test taken on 31 January 2006. Cruz Azul still used him in their lineup in a 2007 postseason game against Pachuca. His presence did not help La Maquina any as they lost 3-1. The FMF had an emergency meeting to deal with the issue and decided to eliminate Cruz Azul and the 2nd leg was never played.
2. Carlos Sánchez – Santos de Brasil (2018)
In 2018 another Brazilian squad was penalized for lining up an ineligible player. Carlos Sanchez lined up for Santos in their Round of 16 match against Independiente. Sanchez had received a red card three years prior while playing for River Plate in the South American Cup. 1. Denís Cheryshev – Real Madrid (2015)
Not to be outdone by their bitter rivals, Real Madrid also makes our list. In 2015 Copa del Rey, Madrid started Denis Cheryshev. Cheryshev scored a goal and was oddly subbed at halftime. Cheryshev was ineligible to play the game as he had racked up too many yellow cards in the previous version of the Copa while playing for Villarreal. Real Madrid went on to win the game 3-1, Cadiz, nonetheless, was made aware of the situation and submitted a complaint. Real was eliminated from the tournament in an embarrassing fashion as a result.
