#FUERATATA: IS TATA THE NEXT SCAPEGOAT FOR THE FMF?
Fuera Tata! Fuera Tata! The chants coming from the stands after another uninspired performance were inescapable. It’s painfully obvious that after a dreadful end to 2021 and an awful start to 2022 the fans have had enough of the current Mexico manager. Tata Martino is the latest sacrificial lamb offered to an impatient fan base that is growing more and more frustrated with the soccer being played by their national squad. However, is Tata the problem or is he just the latest in a long line of scapegoats for El Tri?
Lost seem to be the days we celebrated Mexico’s 11 game unbeaten streak before failing to Argentina, or the 10 game winning streak we witnessed after that. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have bashed Tata’s squad selection and tactics my fair share, even going as far as suggesting my top 5 replacements for him. In spite of that, I have also defended his squads performance. Currently, a complete loss of confidence and motivation plague the squad. Both can be blamed on the manager, but the players as well, if putting on your National teams jersey doesn’t motivate you to bust your ass, you don’t belong there.
Since the year 2000, Mexico has had 19 whipping boys….I mean managers, in either an interim or official role. And, since 2000, 18 have been fired, or have not continued ahead of El Tri, and it seems Tata is on his way to make it 19 of 19. A Mexican coach should be in charge of El Tri! Many say. 13 of those 19 have been Mexican, yet the top 3 managers in PPG (Points per Game) are Tata, Osorio, and El Vasco. Yup, only one Mexican manager.
What should be more unnerving is that since 2000, Mexico only has 5 Gold Cup’s to show for their efforts, in that same time the USA has won 6. No 5th game, no other noteworthy silverware for La Seleccion Grande. Speaking of the elusive 5th game, since 2000, Mexico has witnessed two teams from the region make it to the quarterfinals. The USA in 2002, after eliminating El Tri, and Costa Rica in 2014.
Now comes the million dollar question, how much of this falls on El Tata and the managers that came before him? How much falls on the players? And maybe more importantly, how much falls on the Federation and the media? Let us know below?
