Galaxy Drop Cali Clasico in front of record crowd at Stanford Stadium.
The Galaxy’s struggles continued, now with the absence of their star players, this time losing 3-0 to their bitter rivals up north in yet another installment of the Cali Clasico against the San Jose Earthquakes. As in previous years, the Cali Clasico was a well-attended affair, with over 50-thousand fans gathering at Stanford Stadium to witness the classic rivalry match.
The home team, backed up by a roaring crowd, came out in full force to win the game and continue their dominance over their rivals from the south. They maintained possession of the ball throughout the game, taking advantage of the Galaxy’s key-missing players and lack of consistent play. It didn’t take long for the Earthquake’s to establish their dominance either, as they opened up the scoring at the 11th minute thanks to a low strike from outside the box by “Vako” Qazaishvili. The San Jose squad kept their 1-0 lead for the remainder of the first half and went into the half time break determined to score more.
For the second half, the Galaxy had a few more opportunities, the first coming at the 47th minute of play off a Zlatan header that went just left of the goal post. However, just as in this instance, they were not able to seal the deal and score in any of their other chances generated, a noticeable woe for the Angelino’s this season. Things would remain 1-0 until the 83rd minute, when “Vako”, once again, was able to skirt a few Galaxy defenders to give himself enough space to find a wide-open Shea Salinas coming down the right sideline. From there, Shea took a few steps into the penalty box and fired a cannon past the Galaxy goalkeeper for the 2-0. Just three minutes later, San Jose would extend their lead and score the final goal of the night off a great play by defensive winger, Tommy Thompson. After a few cuts into the area, past a few Galaxy defenders, Thompsons shot would deflect off defender Daniel Steres face leaving Bingham with no option but to see the ball go into the back of his net.
With the 3-0 loss, the Galaxy have now dropped 7 games this season, this being their third loss in their last 6 games. Despite this, they still sit in 2nd place of the Western Conference, with San Jose now slowly creeping up into 5th place of the conference. The Angelinos will head home to face Toronto FC on July 4th, while San Jose head to Minnesota to measure themselves up against Darwin Quintero and Minnesota United on July 3rd.
