GOLD CUP FINAL 2021: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE PICK
Mexico and the USA will face off for the 72nd time to decide the champion of this year’s Gold Cup. El Tri will look to add to their all time lead over their archrival which currently stands at 36-20-15, and get Tata his second Gold Cup trophy. As has been the norm this tournament, I will take a look at the Good, the Bad, and give my pick for this important matchup.
THE GOOD
Mexico’s Defense
Mexico boasts the best defense this tournament, only allowing one goal in five games. Edson Alvarez has done a good job protecting the back line and moving the ball away from dangerous areas quickly. The back four have been solid for the most part, with a few mistakes here and there, but nothing Talavera couldn’t handle. Talavera has rarely been called upon during the tournament, and has performed well when tested. Gallardo and Chaka have had a great tournament both completing their defensive coverages and providing width with their overlaps offensively.
Team Unity
Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring people together. Such is the current case with El Tri, with the sudden passing of Jonathan and Gio Dos Santo’ father Zizinho. Jonathan chose to stay with the team through this tough time for his family and the team has come together around him, never more evident than in both their goal celebrations against Canada. As if Mexico needed more motivation, “Win it For Zizinho” only adds to the team’s desire to win.
THE BAD
Mexico’s Offensive Woes
El Tri has been hot or cold throughout this tournament on offense. The team has only scored nine goals in five games, making some games closer than they need be. The offensive three of Funes Mori, Corona, and Pineda have looked in sync and dangerous at the times, but have not been as accurate in front of goal as needed. This will have to change in the final if Mexico is to win. Matt Turner has been the best keeper this tournament and has only given up one goal, a PK in the opening match of the tournament.
The Final We Wanted?
While Mexico vs the USA will always be CONCACAF’s marquee event, this matchup lacks the star power of others. El Tri is a split team with many players Tata has called upon in the past competing in the Olympic. The Yanks for their part have brought a C squad to the tournament, consisting mostly of MLS players not their European firepower. With that being said, A US vs Mexico match will always be fiercely competitive, no matter who is playing.
THE PICKS
This is Mexico’s game to lose. The game line says as much, with the USA being the underdog @+245, and El Tri @+130, at the time of writing. With that line, a Mexican victory and a $100 wager will more than double your money, with the payout being $230. Needless to say, while I hope for a six goal classic like in 2011, I think this game will be tighter, I’m going with Mexico in a 2-1 victory.
