July 10th will mark the start of the 16th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Mexico has won the competition 8 times and will be looking to win their 9th title in Las Vegas this August. Today, we will discuss our 3rd entry of El Tri Online’s Top CONCACAF Gold Cup moments for the Mexican National team, and that is the 1998 Final between Mexico and the United States.
El Matador gets the Gold
The 1998 Final of the Gold Cup was held in the historic L.A. Memorial Coliseum, and unlike the rest of the gold cup tournaments, this tournament was held during February as the 1998 France World Cup was to take place during the summer.
This would be the 4th time this tournament would occur in its history and marked the 2nd time Mexico and the US faced off in a Gold Cup Final. In front of over 91 thousand fans, the biggest rivalry began in Concacaf began. It didn’t take long for both sides to create opportunities for goals; within the first 10 minutes, both sides had clear shots in front of the goal that they would not be able to capitalize on.
It wasn’t until the 43rd minute where El Tri was able to score the lone goal in the game as Salvador Carmona sent in a cross to the box and Luis “El Matador” Hernandez was able to beat his defenders and head the ball into the net for the 1-0 victory against the United States.
In what would be one of the best years of his career, El Matador gave the gold, Gold Cup goal. Hernandez was also tied for the tournament’s top goalscorer with 4 goals, along with the Costa Rican striker Paulo Wanchope.
And among 91+ thousand fans in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, Luis Hernandez and the rest of the Mexican squad were able to lift their 3rd Gold Cup title once again, defeating their biggest regional rival.
