Guardianes 2020 Liguilla falling into place
The final Saturday of the 2020 Guardianes regular season took place today as Cruz Azul and Pumas closed out the day and finalized the tournament’s top 4 spots. UNAM’s defeat over Los Cementaros, thanks to a last-minute goal from Juan Dinenno, allowed the team from Ciudad Universitaria to leapfrog America.
After being ahead 1-0, Cruz Azul had an opportunity to solidify their lead. However, the tournament’s leading scorer, Jonathan Rodriguez, could not convert the penalty spot and created a path for Pumas to mount a comeback.
Dinenno had already scored on a header in the 86 to tie the game following a nice cross from Juan Vigon. Four minutes later, he scored the game-winner with another header, this time on a cross from Facundo Waller that Jesus Corona was unable to reach.
The goal gave Pumas the victory and allowed them to clinch the second spot in the final standings, followed by America and Cruz Azul wrapped up the top 4. All playoff spots have been clinched; however, the final seedings will be completed tomorrow as Toluca and Santos will be playing then.
Next week there will be a FIFA date, there will be a break. The repechaje will take place on November 21st and 22nd.
