Guardianes 2020: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Looking at Liga MX so far, we are starting to realize who is doing great and who has no opportunity to continue and fight for the title or even come close to the Liguilla based on their performance this season. As always, many surprises and unexpected events make this league one of the most interesting to keep up with. The competition will always have something to offer no matter how they compare it to the rest of the world’s leagues. Let’s break down the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Guardianes season.
The Good
You can say it’s expected to see the top four teams battling it out to see who ends up as the table’s leader. This tournament is no different. The only thing standing out at the moment is that anything can change with only three weeks left for the Guardianes to come to a close. Since the teams are so close in points in the top four, anyone can claim the crown and end up at the top of the leaderboard.
Club Leon is at the top with 30 points and is riding a 10-game unbeaten streak. Right behind them is La Maquina Cementera with 26 points, and we must not forget they defeated Los Panzas Verdes 2-0 earlier this season. Las Aguilas are trailing Cruz Azul by one point with 25 and have not lost since August 22 when Rayados defeated them. Last but not least, Pumas has 24 points and, as recently as three weeks ago, were the last undefeated team until Leon took them down 2-0 in a highly controversial match. As stated, not many points separate the top four, and anything can change. But they have to be careful because the fifth and sixth places are not too far behind and can swoop in and take a spot in the top four if they can get some points. Those teams are Tigres, which currently have 23 points, and Monterrey with 20 points.
The Bad
What’s worse than seeing your team not do well in a season, especially when the year itself feels like it has been a complete mess, you might ask? With their teams struggling to get a solid wildcard spot in the Liguilla as the season is coming to a close with only three weeks left. For many fans, that reality continues to repeat itself; from Chivas de Guadalajara, who is arguably one of the best Liga MX teams ever and is currently in 8th place with 19 points, to Santos Laguna, with 18 points struggling to get to the top where they have seen the glory. Chivas has not been able to get a victory over a quality opponent. They drew nil-nil to with Leon and lost to Tigres, America, and Santos. Speaking of Santos, their most significant win over a quality opponent was against Chivas, which does not say much.
Even the underdogs that have proven their worth in first division soccer, like FC Juarez, currently in 12th place with 14 points but last in the wildcard spots, are having a hard time keeping up this season. As mentioned before, anything can happen, and any of these teams can surprise at the end, but time is running out.
The Ugly
Here comes the worst part of the Guardianes 2020 season. Two teams are fighting each other to see who ends up dead last at the table. Their season is pretty much over, and have very little chance of competing for the trophy this season. If you haven’t guessed it yet, I will let you know that those teams are Mazatlán F.C. with only 10 points and recently fired their coach Francisco “Paco” Palencia not too long ago who was replaced by Tomas Boy, who is now coaching the 11th team of his career.
The other is dead last in the standings with only 8 points. Club Atletico San Luis is on a current 4 game losing streak and has nothing left to prove this season. They were the 2019 Ascenso winners and ascended to Liga MX to compete, but that has not been the case. Expected or not, it is always rough for fans to see their teams struggle during the season, but they expect them to push through and come back strong the following tournament.
With the season nearing its finish, we will expect to see some major changes for the upcoming season. As current world events have taken a toll on everything, it is clear that most of these teams want to conclude the season and prepare for what’s to come.
