Herrera scores to salvage a tie for Atletico in Champions League debut

After a couple of subpar outings with the Mexican National team and La Liga snubs by Diego El Cholo Simeone, Hector Herrera finally wore the Colchoneros kit in an official match.

Herrera showed the home fans why Simeone and company signed him this summer. He scored the game-tying goal in the 90th minute of the critical Champions League match versus Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo.

HH marked his official debut with Atletico in the 76th minute when El Cholo called on him to replace Thomas. With his team down 2-1, Herrera quickly made an impact on the field. He showcased some of his footwork and made solid runs that created some danger.

Atletico broke through and tied the game in the 90th minute when Herrera scored with a header off the corner kick by Kieran Trippier. The Mexican jumped and nearly crashed into his teammate, but was able to get enough ball to beat a diving Wojciech Szczesny.

The result is a formidable one for Simeone’s men particularly after being down 2-0. It will be interesting to see if El Cholo begins to consider Herrera for upcoming matches now that the Mexican showed he could step up during the big games.
