How the Minutes Rule Works For The Liga MX Apertura 2024

For the Apertura 2024, the Liga MX has reintroduced the rule designed to provide more opportunities for young players. Teams are required to accumulate 1,000 minutes of play with homegrown players born between 2001 and 2005. However, as with everything with Liga MX and the FMF, it is never that simple. There are specific stipulations and calculations involved in this rule. Here are a few of the criteria for the new rule.

Key Points of the Rule:

Eligible Players: The rule applies to young players born between 2001 and 2005 and trained in Mexico.

Full Minutes Credit: Only players born in 2005 or later count 100% of their minutes played towards the 1,000-minute requirement.

Proportional Credit:

   – For Players born in 2004 count 80% of their minutes.

   – Players born in 2003 count 60% of their minutes.

   – For Players born in 2002 count 40% of their minutes.

   – Players born in 2001 count 20% of their minutes.

Maximum Accumulation Per Game:

Each club can accumulate 180 minutes per game towards the 1,000-minute total.

Impact of the Rule:

This rule mandates that each of the 18 Liga MX teams must reach the 1,000-minute threshold over the 17 regular-season matches to encourage the inclusion of young talent. The immediate effect of this rule was noticeable, as the first matchday of the season saw over ten players make their professional debuts.

This initiative aims to foster the development of young players within the league, providing them with substantial playing time and experience. By doing so, Liga MX hopes to enhance the competitive level of homegrown talent and strengthen the overall quality of Mexican football. The move seems to be a step in the right direction. Next up, a set of regulations to encourage teams to transfer players to Europe at a good price……we can only hope!
