Ibrahimovic and the LA Galaxy continue to run the table in 2-1 win over Montreal
The Los Angeles Galaxy came into Saturday night’s match up fifth in the Standings as they looked to stay in playoff contention. Los Galacticos are coming off an impressive 7-2 win over Sporting KC and look to run the table in their last four matchups of the season starting with Montreal Impact.
From the get-go, Los Angeles seemed eager to open up the scoring and display their dominance over the Canadian squad. Cristian Pavon continued his beautiful style of play as it kept the Impact’s defense on their feet. For most of the match neither the Galaxy nor the Impact could get much going for their team until the 30th minute. Pavon would take the ball into the 18-yard box, cut back and try to play it towards Jonatan Dos Santos. Dos Santos would first time the shot towards goal but it would deflect off Uriel Antuna’s chest leaving it for Zatlan to put the home team up 1-0.
Los Angeles would head into the locker room up one goal thanks to their MVP Ibrahimovic. Los Galacticos would be the dominant team at the end of the first half. They controlled 58% of possession hitting nearly 50% of their shots on goal.
As the second half would get on its way, Montreal wouldn’t take long to even things up in Los Angeles. Just three minutes in, in the 48th minute Galaxy’s defensive woes would continue. Montreal’s Lassi Lappalainen would get behind the Galaxy’s defense off a beautiful cross into the 18-yard box and header it in to even things up for the road team.
Los Galacticos would not let up and continue to pressure the Canadian side. Just two minutes after Montreal would even things up, Pavon would pressure Impact’s keeper causing him to lose the ball. Pavon would chase it down to the right sideline, put a cross into play towards Zatlan who would header it back to the center towards Antuna. Uriel would gather himself as he got rid of one of his defenders and take a shot straight on goal to give him his third goal in as many matches and put up the Galaxy 2-1.
The result would be enough to give Los Angeles the three points at home and move them up to third place in the standings, as of now. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would score his 27th goal of the season leaving him two shy of Carlos Vela who scored his 29th of the season. Uriel Antuna has been on a tear lately scoring three goals in three matchups giving him five for the season. LA Galaxy look to continue running the table as they have three games left in the season. Their most important test will come Wednesday on the road against Real Salt Lake with playoff implications on the line.
