Javier Hernandez begins new journey with the LA Galaxy

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has ended his career in Europe and has reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS. The Galaxy reportedly paid $10 million for Hernandez and will make him the highest-paid player in the league on an annual salary that is around $6 million a year for 3 years.

Hernandez’s passage through the old continent began in 2010 with Manchester United of England. With the Red Devils, he scored 59 goals; becoming the third-best scorer of the decade for United, following Wayne Rooney and Marcus Rashford.

In 2014, to everyone’s surprise, Javier Hernández signed with Real Madrid on the last day of summer signings. A photo together with Florentino Pérez highlighted the hiring of the Mexican. His time with the Merengues was short-lived playing only one season in Madrid. Hernandez would go on to score a vital Champions League quarter-finals goal against cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid in 2015.

After the 2014/2015 season, Chicharito signed with German club Bayern Leverkusen where he played 54 games and scored 34 goals among all competitions. After 3 years in Germany, Chicharito decided to try his luck and emigrated back to England this time to play for West Ham United.

Chicharito’s time with the “Hammers” was modest at best, scoring 17 goals in 3 years. Sevilla came calling next granting an exit and an opportunity for Hernandez. Mexico’s highest scorer quickly fell out of the rotation due to a lack of production playing in 23 games but only scoring three goals. Yearning for more playing time, Chicharito decided it was time to end his European career and begin anew in North America.

In an interview with MLS.com Hernandez stated: “I’m not here to retire or do anything less,” Hernandez said. “I’m here to keep growing as a person, as a football player, to achieve everything in this league, to help my team, the coaching staff, the club and the people who have placed all their trust in me to win many championships. Not just one, but many. And why not, in the future be the first, second or third team to go to the Club World Cup or be Concacaf Champions. To aim for the best and the biggest.”

Arguably Mexico’s biggest icon during the past decade, Javier Hernandez will look to reinvigorate his career with the Galaxy and bring to a close one of the most storied careers in Mexican football history.
