JJ Macias’ helps Leon beat his old team Chivas

It had been over 300 minutes since Club Leon had scored at home. That changed in the 19th minute of the game when Jose Juan Macias converted his first of two penalties on the way to Leon’s 4-3 victory over Chivas.

Macias and Leon continued to show the rest of Liga MX why they are favorites to win the title this season. Chivas, for their part, are still facing relegation, and the result today does not help their cause.

Alan Pulido tied the score after converting a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Right before the teams went to the lockers, Ecuadorian International, Angel Mena scored with a beautiful diving header to give Los Panzas Verdes 2-1 lead.

Ignacio Ambriz’ men tacked on two more goals early in the second half. The 4-1 lead seemed to demoralized the team from Jalisco and forced Tomas Boy to make some adjustments. The VAR showed its face once again, and the referee whistled several of tonight’s penalties after reviewing the plays in question.

The men responsible for the VAR did a reasonably decent job and showed good judgment. They exhibited after the linesman annulled Yairo Moreno’s goal, which as it turned out, was an incorrect call.

Chivas tallied two additional goals towards the end of the match. Pulido scored another penalty goal which tied him for eighth in Chivas all-time scorers list with Javier Chicharito Hernandez, and Hector Reynoso. Despite all that, if you watched the game, you would not be fooled by the 4-3 score. Los Esmeralda’s completely dominated the game, and the result should have been more like 6-2.

After Alexis Vega came into the game, he proved to be a difference-maker once again. It will be interesting to see if Tomas Boy gives the young player more playing time as Vega, in the eyes of many, has earned it. Guadalajara continues to struggle on the road. The team from Jalisco has not won on the road since beating Cruz Azul at Estadio Azteca early in the last season.
