LA Galaxy defeat RSL 2-1 to secure first playoff appearance since 2016

The LA Galaxy visited Western Conference rivals Real Salt Lake for their share of MLS mid-week action. The Galaxy knew they had total control of their destiny coming into the game if they wanted to make the playoffs this year.

The game started off rather slow. The home team had slightly better possession of the ball throughout the game, and played a big role in keeping things level during the first half. After a tame 45 minutes, both teams headed to the locker rooms with a 0-0 tie.

The second half would prove more entertaining. At the 50th minute, new Galaxy star, Cristian Pavon, would score his 2nd goal for the Los Angelinos. After a goal kick by Galaxy goalie Bingham made its way past half field, the Lion, Zlatan, was able to connect on the ball with his head to send Pavon a perfect pass. From there, Pavon would drive down the field, eventually making it into the penalty area where he would fire off a shot to open up the scoring 1-0.

Now that Pavon had scored his second goal in a Galaxy shirt, the team looked to finish off the win. They would score another decisive goal at the 80th minute by way of Zlatan. This time, Pavon would return eh favor and set up Zlatan with an assist inside the area. Ibra would not double think it and got off a shot as he was receiving the ball for the 2-0. This goal brought Zlatan’s goal total to 28 for the season.

Real Salt Lake would attempt to get closer at the 89th minute, however, it was too little too late. Although they did manage to score by way of defender Nedum Onuoha, the game would end with a 2-1 in favor of the Angelinos.

With this win, the LA Galaxy have secured an appearance in the MLS Playoffs for the first time since 2016. They will travel back home to face off with Vancouver on Sunday before ending the season in Houston. The Utah team for their part is still very much in the playoff race. However, it’ll be up to them if they can win out their remaining two games to make it to the playoffs. They will play host to Houston Dynamo on Sunday before heading out to Vancouver for their final game of the season.
