LA Galaxy lose to Colorado 2-1 and fall to 8th place.
Coming into Wednesday nights game, the Los Angeles Galaxy came in seventh in the standings after a heartbreaking 3-4 loss against Seattle. In their last five matches the Los Angelinos have managed to win just one win with last one coming on August 14th. Galaxy would get back Uriel Antuna from International break with Jonathan Dos Santos not being on the active roster. Los Angeles would come in eager as Guillermo and company see these last six games as playoff matches. Zatlan and company would look to leave Mile High atop the standings.
Los Angeles came out playing well, setting the tone and keeping Colorado on their toes. In the tenth minute Zatlan would blast a shot over the cross bar alerting the Rapid’s goal keeper. Just a few minutes later in the 19th minute, Favio Alvarez would receive a ball in the box after two headers played forward and blasted it towards goal straight into the keepers hands.
Los Galacticos would look to open up the scoring as Colorado kept showing their dominance in their stye of play. In the 27th minute, Zatlan would get a one on one with the keeper with the defense approaching but would not get enough control of the ball as the defense would clear the danger.
Both teams would head into the locker room with a 0-0 draw. The Galaxy did not take advantage of their few opportunities while being out played by the home team. Colorado would have nine shots on goal with seven on target compared to Los Angeles four owning 57% of possession.
The high elevation would eventually get the best of Los Angelinos. In the 79th minute a set piece would break down Galaxy’s defense. As the ball is played into the 18 yard box, David Bingham would come out and miss read the trajectory of the ball and leave Cole Bassett to header it in opening up the scoring.
The Colorado lead would not last long. A few minutes later in the 82nd minute, Giancarlo Gonzalez would rise high and score a header off a corner from Cristian Pavon for his first goal with Galaxy to tie things up late.
VAR controversy would follow Galaxy to its highest peaks. Colorado would get a penalty after Andre Shinyashiki would get dropped in the box. After review, Nicolas Mezquida would convert to put up the home team 2-1.
Galaxy would look to dry things up picking up their pace of play. In the 90+ minute after a set play, Zatlan would attempt to put a ball into play as Rolf Feltscher would attempt to header in the equalizer. The ball would go wide left but Feltscher would go down after being kicked on the head. There would be no call for the away team as things would end in a Los Angeles 1-2 loss.
Galaxy controls their own fate as they head into these last five games of the season. Three of these five are at home for Guillermo and company. With a tough game at Salt Lake City later on this month, Los Angeles looks to shake off their 4-9-2 road record and earn very important three points. Galaxy get set to host Sporting KC on Sunday as Colorado gets ready to visit Toronto. With this score, the team from Los Angeles momentarily drops to 8th in the standings.
