LAFC Eliminated from MLS Cup Playoffs
The 2020 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs wrapped up their First-Round action today with the final match of the day being Seattle Sounders vs LAFC. Carlos Vela and company travelled north to Seattle for a rematch of last year’s Western Conference Finals. While LAFC was not the same powerhouse of last season for this time around, they still were a dangerous team, especially with Vela back in the lineup.
Seattle would be a tough opponent, however. The Sounders finished the season in second place and have been playing in great form, having only lost 3 of their last 14 games. They were the first to come out swinging as well, as they managed to score early on in the game thanks Nicolas Lodeiro. LAFC would have the opportunity to score just a minute later via penalty after Vela was taken down inside the Seattle box. It would be Vela himself who would be in charge of taking the kick and who ultimately ended up missing it, inexplicably shooting the ball down center directly at the opposing goalkeeper. This would be the theme of the night for the black and gold sadly; almost there but not quite.
In the second half, Seattle would score again, this time at the 66th minute of play. At that point, LAFC was attempting to give it their all but couldn’t seem to find a way to make themselves more dangerous against the Sounders. They would eventually shorten Seattle’s lead when, just ten minutes later, Eduard Atuesta scored for the 2-1. It would seem like they would close the gap but once again, not quite, since just three minutes later, Jordan Morris ended up scoring the Sounders third goal of the night. LAFC managed to score again eight minutes later but the goal was offsides and eventually overturned. The score would end 3-1 in favor of Seattle thus ending LAFC and Carlos Vela’s participation in this year’s playoffs.
