Layún gives Monterrey a last-minute win versus Morelia.

Los Rayados de Monterrey visited Monarcas Morelia to open up Week 4 of Liga MX action. After having their mid-week Copa MX game cancelled due to rain, Monterrey arrived in Morelia well rested, but with more rain.

During the first half,  the rain seemed to play only a small factor as both teams were locked in a back and forth. Despite Morelia being down one man by the end of the first half, they were able to keep things leveled with some opportunities to score themselves.

During half-time however, that rain that cancelled Monterrey’s earlier game seemed to rear its head around again. After a 30 minute delay to rain and lightning, both teams were able to hop back onto the field to continue the game. The rain affected some of the gameplay early on in the second half but both teams kept the same pace as before. Morelia for a while seemed to be playing a better game and seemed to be happy managing the game to a tie, considering they were down a man since the 43rd minute. However, that’s when Mexico National Team star Miguel Layún showed up to spoil it for the home team. At the 95th minute, Layún was able to connect off a rebound near the edge of the penalty box, sending his shot to the back of the net for the last minute Monterrey win.

With this score, Monterrey heads back home to host Toluca next week. Morelia for their part will have to quickly get over their loss as they will have to travel to Mexico City to visit Club America.
