Leon’s win streak and Clasico Joven feature in Rd 14 of Liga MX!
History could be made this week as we approach Round 14 of Liga MX. There are only four games left to play in the season, with a few points separating the third through ninth place teams. Needless to say a victory this weekend can be crucial for any club making a run for the postseason.
At this point in the season, Leon is the clear favorites to win the Clausura 2019 trophy. Coming into this round, Los Panzas Verdes are riding an impressive 10-game winning streak featuring the best offense and defense of the tournament. They are hoping to make history this weekend by becoming the only team in the history of Liga MX to win 11 consecutive games.
Los Verdiblancos will face Puebla who is on the outside looking in. Currently, ninth place in the standings Los Camoteros are three points removed from third place Monterrey. They are 3-1-1 in their last five matches and will look to get a much needed three points when they host Leon in Estadio Cuauhtemoc.
Tigres & Monterrey in action
Tigres at one point in the season were the leaders in the standings, and for some, the team will take it all. Los Felinos have managed to stay atop the standings dominating most of the competition. Although they are coming off a 2-3 loss against Santos in their second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League, they advance to the Championship stage with a 5-3 aggregate and will face Monterrey in El Clasico Regio. They are 3-1-1 in their last five league matches and will visit Lobos Buap who is surprising the expectations of most pundits this season.
They have a better record than three historic squads in Guadalajara, Atlas and Pumas UNAM and are 11th in the standings with 17 points. Six points separate them from the number three seed, and with a little help from the rest of the league, they have an opportunity to make it to the postseason.
From being undefeated in the first ten weeks of the season, Monterrey has lost two games in their last three and has had one victory in their previous five. Their latest loss comes at the hands of Toluca who dominated Los Rayados 5-1 this past Sunday. Los Albiazules hope to put their last few performances behind them and ride the dominance that they have had in the CONCACAF Champions League. Monterrey dominated MLS Sporting KC with an aggregate of 10-2 to advance to the Championship game of the regional competition.
This Sunday, they will face Santos Laguna, who hasn’t performed well and is 0-2-3 in their last five. They are 12th in the standings and hope to give their fans something to celebrate this season. On paper, Los Rayados should come out with the three points as they look to get back to their dominant ways, but in Futbol nothing is ever written.
El Clasico Joven
El Clásico Joven in Mexico City highlights Round 14 of the Clausura tournament. Haven’t faced each other since the Apertura Championship, where America captured their 13th title, Las Aguilas will come into El Azteca as the home team to show off their new silverware. After having three consecutive victories, Las Aguilas have lost their previous two league matches. For this squad that is water under the bridge as they have just captured their 8th Copa MX. They will be facing the champion of the last Copa MX, in Cruz Azul.
La Maquina who struggled at the beginning of the season, seems to have found their identity. They are 4-1-0 in their last five games and stand fifth in the standings, tied with America with 22 points each. This game is not just another game for the two teams, so expect nothing to be taken lightly by either of these squads from Mexico City.
