Liga MX countdown, 3 days to go! Mark your calendars for The Clásicos
While the Apertura 2019 has many intriguing matchups, let’s take a closer look at the games that make fans circle their calendars, The Clásicos! Liga MX offers five clásicos for fans to enjoy.
CHIVAS VS. ATLAS
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until Week 9 to watch our first clásico. On Sept. 14, Chivas will host Atlas at Akron Stadium for the Clásico Tapatío. This rivalry dates back to 1917, in a game where El Rebaño and La Academia drew 0-0. Chivas have won three of the last five matches, their latest victory coming in a 3-0 thumping of Los Zorros via Alexis Vega’s hat trick. This will be an important match as El Rebaño, and Atlas are 16th and 15th respectively on the relegation table.
AMERICA VS. PUMAS
On Sept. 15, we will get the Clásico Capitalino between Club América and UNAM in the mythical Estadio Azteca. This rivalry began in 1962 with a 2-0 Águilas victory over los Pumas. Los Universitarios got a small form of revenge last season when they beat their rivals 1-0, after being humiliated 7-2 on aggregate the previous Liguilla. América has the advantage of having 34 wins compared to UNAM’s 24. Águila legend Luis Roberto Alves “Zague” is the top goal scorer in this rivalry with 14 goals.
Week 12 will serve us two of the biggest clásico’s Liga MX has to offer. Sept 28 will bring the Clásico Regiomontano as well as the Super Clásico.
MONTERREY VS. TIGRES
First, Los Rayados will face Tigres in the Clásico Regiomontano at Monterrey’s BBVA Stadium. This rivalry dates to 1974 when both teams played to a 3-3 draw. Tigres edges their crosstown rivals with 41 victories to Monterrey’s 39. This rivalry took center stage last season, as these teams met both in the Concacaf Champions League Final as well as the Liga MX Liguilla. The results were split with La Pandilla winning the Concacaf Champions League title, while Tuca’s men eliminated Monterrey in the Liguilla en route to the Clausura championship. Mario de Souza “Bahia” leads the rivalry in goals with 11.
AMERICA VS. CHIVAS
Then the Super Clásico will take center stage as América will host their biggest nemesis Chivas at Estadio Azteca. Las Águilas lead the historic matchup with 84 victories to El Rebaño’s 74. While El Chiverio won the initial meeting 1-0 in 1943’s Copa Mexico, recently the balance has been toward Los Azul-Cremas as they have won their last two meetings 2-0. Chivas icon Salvador “Chava” Reyes is the top goal scorer in this clásico with 13 goals.
CRUZ AZUL VS. AMERICA
Our final clásico will come in Week 13 with El Clásico Joven, when Cruz Azul will host América at the Gigante de Santa Ursula, the Estadio Azteca. This rivalry kicked off in 1964 with the Águilas winning 2-1. Their last Liga MX match ended in a 0-0 draw, but América eliminated Cruz Azul in the Liguilla with a 3-2 aggregate score. Los Cementeros lead with 53 victories to América’s 50. Paco Palencia leads all goal scorers in this matchup with 9.
