Liga MX Guard1anes 2020: Week 2
The Liga MX Guard1anes 2020 tournament is well underway now with Week 1 behind us. It was business as usual without many surprises, the biggest perhaps being Monterrey finally winning their first regular season game since November 23rd of 2019. But moving on to Week 2, which kicks off today, let’s review what we’ve got in store.
For today’s share of games, Week 2 starts off with Puebla vs Cruz Azul. Both teams are coming off victories, although all eyes will be on Cruz Azul, who have been in phenomenal form in all of 2020. Following that game will be Bravos vs Necaxa. Los Bravos are coming off a tie against San Luis while Necaxa lost 3-0 to Tigres at home. The pressure will be on for both teams, as Bravos will want to win in Juarez for their home opener and Necaxa will want to quickly bounce back from that loss. It should be noted that Bravos was one of the teams hit hardest by COVID-19, to the extent where their Week 1 match had to be postponed by a few days because of cases within the team.
Saturday is typically the prime day for Liga MX but this time around we’ll only have two games to feast on. The first one up is Tigres vs Pachuca. Tigres as usual are in good form, having demonstrated as much with last week’s 3-0 stomping against Necaxa. Of course, critics will be quick to say that Necaxa was a weaker team comparatively, so this test against Pachuca should help quiet the doubters just a little bit more. Pachuca on their end are coming off a last-minute loss against America and will want to redeem themselves and get back to winning ways as soon as possible. Speaking of America, the second game of Saturday’s double-header will be Las Aguilas against Club Tijuana. Both teams are coming off wins in Week 1 and both have usually given us good matches whenever they face off. Tijuana is known for always being consistent and America for their end are always expected to perform at a top-level week in and week out. Curiously enough, both are among the teams least affected by COVID, with America having reported zero cases.
Sunday will see the most action with three games being played that day, the first of which will be Toluca vs Atletico San Luis. Toluca is coming off a shameful defeat against Monterrey, while Atletico San Luis are waiting to see their star signing, Mauro Quiroga, help them earn their first win of the young tournament. Later in the evening we will have Queretaro against the newly formed Mazatlán. Both teams are coming off of losses and will want to start correcting their errors sooner rather than later, especially in the case of Mazatlán. Mazatlán in particular has the added stress of being a newcomer to the league and as such they need to prove themselves as worthy as fast as they can. Following this game, its Chivas turn to face off against Santos. Chivas is another team that always has the spotlight on them, for better or worse. They have been hit particularly hard by COVID injuries with some key players of theirs coming down with the disease. Among them are; Oribe Peralta, Uriel Antuna, Alexis Vega, Ronaldo Cisnero and even head coach Fernando Tena. Coach Tena for his part has cleared COVID protocol’s and has since joined the team. Chivas however will have to make do without the aforementioned players. They tied against Leon last week but will be hoping to forget about that against a usually strong Santos team that’s coming off a loss to Cruz Azul.
Monday will also feature two games. The first will be Atlas vs Pumas which was originally meant to be played Saturday but was postponed due to positive coronavirus cases with the Rojinegro squad. Atlas will be coming off a loss which they’ll want to correct while Pumas will want to continue their winning form despite being without a head coach. Following that game, Leon and Monterrey will square off. Leon, as mentioned earlier, tied with Chivas while Monterrey finally broke their winless Liga MX streak. It remains to be seen if Monterrey is able to keep up with more wins or if last week’s victory was simply a fluke.
