Liga MX Rankings: Week 1
The first week of the 2019 Apertura Liga MX got off to a good start! With the first results already in place, some of our contributors decided to vote on the top 5 teams this past weekend and here’s what they came up with. Let us know what you think?
5. Tigres UANL
After losing the Campeon de Campeones in a penalty shootout against America, Tigres was hurt and they needed to set their minds on defending their title in the new season. With a full squad against Monarcas Morelia, they played to their full potential in the first half as they were leading 3-0. Tuca and his team lost their rhythm at the beginning of the second half, losing control of the game. Even though Tigres won 4-2, they failed to impress but showed how dangerous they can be if they stay focus.
4. Xolos
The last defeat Xolos received was in the first leg of the Clausura quarterfinals against Leon. Since then, Tijuana has been undefeated in preseason games and gained their first points after a 3-1 away win against Puebla. Even though Xolos sold one of their star players, Gustavo Bou, they managed to play at a competitive level and show signs that they could be a top contender this season.
3. Santos Laguna
Santos showcased the powerhouse that they are against Chivas this past Sunday with a 3-0 win in Torreon. Although some might say that Los Laguneros played an unstable Guadalajara, Santos was a nightmare in both halves. They could have won by at least five goals or more because of their ability to counterattack and accurate shots on goal. If Santos keeps this up, we can expect to see them at the top of the table more often.
2. Leon
Most of us still remember how Leon won our hearts as the underdogs as they reached the Clausura 2019 final against Tigres. Even though they lost, they were able to show their talent as a team and they certainly did not lose much of it when they defeated Pachuca 3-1. So far, Leon has shown they are ready for revenge and have their eyes set on winning the Liga MX Apertura.
1. America
El Campeon de Campeones did not disappoint and played an excellent match in the Azteca. Nico Castillo did what he was brought over to do and scored twice in the 4-2 victory against Monterrey. Many fans were expecting to see Giovani Dos Santos make his Liga MX debut on the field, but they quickly forgot about him after an exceptional performance by Renato Ibarra. His quick speed and agility were no match for Rayado’s defense and he made his presence known. El Piojo has already won his fourth trophy as America’s head coach, can he win his fifth this season?
