Liga MX Rankings: Week 18

The Liga MX Apertura 2019 is reaching the end of its regular season and on its way to playoffs. This past weekend, we’ve chosen the best teams to join our rankings list.

5. Monterrey

Despite having struggles throughout the season on the field and a sacked coach, Monterrey’s 4-0 victory against Xolos put them into playoff position…for now.

Currently in 8th place, four teams are right behind them looking to steal that spot, putting high-pressure on Los Rayados. They will need to win at home against Atlas in the last game of the season.

4. Monarcas

There’s no doubt that Morelia has been the ultimate underdog and is the least talked about team in the season. In their last five games, they’ve had three wins and two draws, which has kept them motivated to move up in the standings to fight for the title.

After defeating Puebla 3-2, Monarcas now has to worry about getting a good result in Queretaro to increase their chances of participating in playoffs.

3. Leon

After an easy 4-0 win against Toluca, Leon looks more ready and confident to play for the Apertura 2019 trophy. Last season, La Fiera had surpassed records and was the big favorite in winning the title, but lost at home against Tigres.

This time, Leon may not be at the top of the table but they are seeking revenge. Whether it be Tigres or any other team, they want to rewrite history this year and lift the cup.

2. Necaxa

Not many would have expected for Necaxa to be a main contender this season but it’s certainly impressive. After a victory over Atletico San Luis, they’ve sealed their spot in playoffs and have Mauro Quiroga to thank for as the main factor in the offensive.

Quiroga has 12 goals this season and could be named top scorer at the end of the season depending on how the last round of Liga MX ends.

1. Santos

It comes as no surprise to see Santos Laguna back again at number one on our rankings list. Santos has the most goals scored (38) and leads the Liga MX standings with 36 points. They have been the most feared in the season and will most likely do even more damage in playoffs.

Let’s just hope the curse of the ‘Super Lider’ doesn’t affect them in the first round of liguilla and they keep showing their strong performances if they want to become champions.
